It’s official, Russell Westbrook‘s new contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder is now the most lucrative in the history of the NBA.
It’s not just his salary that is raising eyebrows. Oklahoma City could be looking at $138 million in guaranteed contracts for next season if both Paul George and Carmelo Anthony opt into their deals. The 2018-19 season’s salary cap is projected to be $101 million, with a projected luxury tax number of around $125 million.
Oklahoma will be liable to pay significant luxury tax penalties as potential repeat offenders. But the teams owners and front office is reportedly committed to paying a massive luxury tax bill, the result of that means they won’t be afraid to retain the contacts of both George and Anthony.
With huge contacts in the works, the Thunder could and would become the first NBA team in history to spend $300 million on combined salary and luxury tax.
With Westbrook now locked in to the team for the next five seasons. General manager of the Thunder, Sam Presti will now shift his focus to persuading George and Anthony to stay long-term as well.
