Following the announcement that Frankie Dettori has been forced to pull out of Saturday’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, trainer John Godsen has been looking to acquire the services of a new rider. Godsen seems to have settled on Irish jockey Pat Smullen, to take the reigns of his 3-year-old colt Cracksman.
Smullen’s agent Kevin O’Ryan said of the announcement: “He has been booked to ride Cracksman. He’s an absolutely brilliant ride to get.”
Of all of the races that Dettori will miss through injury, missing the opportunity to ride Cracksman once again will no doubt be the bitterest pill to swallow. Dettori rode the colt to a first place finish back in April, but was forced to settle for third at last month’s Epsom Derby.
Cracksman was recently named favourite for the upcoming event, and will be hoping to turn the tables on Epsom victor Wings Of Eagles. The horse’s owner Anthony Oppenheimer said of the upcoming race: “I think making him favourite is slightly premature, especially as the two who beat him [at Epsom] are also in the Irish Derby.”
