When it comes to grudges, DeAngelo Williams is apparently one to carry it around.
How do we know that? Well, when Williams was asked recently about his old boss, a boss he didn’t care for mind you, the Panthers running back wasn’t shy in his offloading of the grudge he has held on to for years.
Williams told a local New York sports station that he was no fan of the New York Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman. He was in fact the one that had Williams cut from Carolina following the 2004 season.
Williams told the station: “He’s your problem now,” adding: “That’s exactly what I’d tell them. For the vet players that are there now, be very cautious. Once he gets his guys in there, then he develops that relationship with them, and not developing a relationship with the guys that are already there because he doesn’t know them.”
When Gettleman landed the job at the Panthers his main aim was to clean house and clean up the team’s books. Williams became part of that clean up and was cut from the team. As well as Williams, wide receiver Steve Smith was shown the door for the sake of Cam Newton’s well-being, and in Williams’ eyes, this was done with little grace.
“When you’re down in that locker room you are family . . . If I’m friends with you or I’m a family member of yours, when I call you into the office to release you, I handle it in a family member type way,” Williams added: ‘Hey, we really appreciate everything you’ve done for this organization, really loved everything you’re doing,’ it’s more like breaking up with your girlfriend, ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ Whatever excuses you give.
He added: “When you come into an office somebody handling business, ‘Hey man, you’re gone.’ Like, wait, what? . . . Nine years. I been here for nine years, I played through injuries . . . I give everything you possibly can for an organization and the way they let you go is ‘Hey man, you’re out of here.’ They let Steve (Smith) go through a text message.”
The fact that Williams is talking about this now is nothing new. He has being hammering on about Gettleman on social media for a long time now, and referred to Gettleman as snake in the past. Ouch.
