Odell Beckham Jr. is hoping to become the highest paid player in the NFL when he signs his next contract. The New York Giants star is currently on the fourth year of his rookie contract, and the franchise have picked up the 24-year-old’s fifth-year option for 2018.

The New York Giants have one of the league’s best bargains in Odell Beckham Jr. The wide receiver is tipped as one of the NFL’s hottest stars, yet his current contract earns Beckham Jr a modest $1.84mil (£1.47mil) per year. To put that into context, £1.47 million is about what Lionel Messi makes in a month.

As it stands the highest paid NFL athlete is Derek Carr, who earns around $25mil (£18mil) per year, but Beckham Jr. is fully expecting to top that figure.

“I believe that I will be hopefully not just the highest-paid receiver in the league, but the highest paid, period.” said Beckham Jr.

“It’s like the elephant in the room, and you don’t want to talk about it,” “But I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I’m like, ‘No, I’m going to … there’s no need to not talk about it.”
